Rio de Janeiro, Brazil >> A Rio beach boy. Marcos is a singer, instrumentalist, songwriter and producer that plays with romantic bossa-pop, cinematic brass, strings and features of psychedelia. He left Brazil during the dictatorship because of the working restrictions and moved to California where he collaborated with the legendary Sara Vaughn. He later returned to Brazil and experimented with North-eastern styles, whilst also staying true to his romantic bossa. To this day he still records and tours 'staying abreast of the times without compromising on the spirit of bossa.'
Lagos, Nigeria >> 'Perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived' - Brian Eno, 'Without Tony Allen there would be no Afrobeat' - Fela. Tony's a self-taught musician who started at the age of 18, inspired by the sounds his father listened to which included traditional Yoruba to American jazz. He soon became a famed drummer and joined Fela to make-up the band Africa 70 together with co-founding the genre Afrobeat. Post-Fela he developed a hybrid sound that fused Afrobeat, electronica, dub, R&B and rap to make up Afro-funk. The creator of two musical genres and the greatest drummer ever? Sweet life achievements.
Dallas, USA >> No doubt one of the best R&B players in our generation that is constantly pushing the boundaries of her sounds and styles. She has the ability to make each track a living, breathing entity because of the depth and variations she brings. I saw her in Brixton a few years back and was amazed at her ability to give 'On & On' a complete alter-ego and still make the crowd fall in love with it just like the original.
LA, USA >> Dubbed as the 'Godfather of Neo-soul.' He was one of the frontrunners in intercepting jazz and hip-hop during the Acid jazz movement. He's an incredible vibraphonist which he picked up when he was 5 and is still playing at the ripe age of 73. His sounds even infuse Afrobeat which led him to collaborate with Fela in the '80s on a release titled 'Music of many colours.'
